A family on a 60-foot sailboat was 300 miles northeast of South Georgia Island, bound for the Falkland Islands, when they apparently struck a submerged iceberg – a “growler” – and their vessel began rapidly taking on water.
The boat’s EPIRB signal was triggered and, with water rising above their ankles, they waited on deck for a rescue.
