A holed Russian fishing boat remains in a precarious position in Antarctica. The Sparta is stranded next to the Antarctic ice shelf in the Ross Sea, about 2,000 nautical miles southeast of New Zealand.
That country’s Rescue Coordination Centre said that a 32-member crew has continued working to stabilize the boat, which was taking on water during the weekend and listing 13 degrees after striking ice and putting a nearly foot-wide hole in the hull, five feet below the water line.
