The Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport will present the 32nd International Marine Art Exhibition and Sale, opening Sept. 25 and running through Nov. 13.

The exhibitions is the most comprehensive collection of contemporary marine art in the nation, according to organizers. More than 100 artists from eight countries around the globe will present their most recent works. Represented in this show are paintings, drawings, sculpture, scrimshaw and ship models.

The show is meant to serve as a commemoration of the nation’s maritime heritage, with both intricately researched historical scenes and contemporary images that document the relationship of man to the sea. Click here for some examples of works to be exhibited.

“Every year we strive to find the best work in the marine field and bring it to our gallery at Mystic Seaport,” said Jeanne Potter, director of the Maritime Gallery. “The show is a wonderful opportunity to view — and purchase — the latest and finest efforts from the most accomplished marine artists working today.”

Participating artists of note include David Bareford, Robert Dance, Don Demers, Russ Kramer and Victor Mays. In addition, the gallery welcomes eight new artists juried into the show this year.

To mark the opening to museum members and the general public, the gallery will hold an “Artists Walk” at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 25. Approximately 20 participating artists will be present to share how they created their works and answer questions.

Admission to the Maritime Gallery is free. A portion from all gallery purchases helps to support maritime preservation work at the museum.
