New Zealand adventurer Ron Daw set sail Sunday on his solo quest to sail around the world. The 79-year-old is seeking to become the oldest sailor to circumnavigate the world alone, turning 80 when he returns in about 10 months.
Daw said the voyage aboard his 28-foot boat was his final challenge, so he could retire gracefully from the pastime after many happy years of sailing.
“I’m ready to go now. I’m getting on a wee bit now, they tell me,” he told the local Oamaru Mail newspaper.
The boat is stocked with enough provisions to last for nine months, Daw says. He has no computer on board, but will be writing a log and keeping family and friends updated when he reaches the Falkland Islands.
A satellite phone will enable him to talk from anywhere in the world.

The website Sail-World.com reported on Daw’s voyage, noting that the rush of ever-younger would-be solo circumnavigators seems to be over, but it’s the turn of the over- 70s crowd.
