A man died and eight others were rescued after their pontoon boat went over a Maryland dam Saturday.

Rescue workers recovered the body of 62-year-old Stephen Hembree almost five hours after the accident was reported, according to Capt. Kevin Fox, a spokesman for the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Services.

Officials told the Frederick News-Post that several people fell off the pontoon boat before it went over the Lake Linganore dam, and some were hanging on to trees in the aftermath.

Three of the eight rescued were stranded on the spillway, clinging to rocks as a Maryland State Police helicopter hoisted them one by one.

Those who were rescued were taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital, but there were no details about their injuries.

Frederick County sheriffs believe weather was a factor in the accident.
