A Detroit man was sentenced to 30 months in prison for making a hoax call about a capsized boat to the Coast Guard, costing the government roughly $53,000 in search-and-rescue efforts.

Craig Sanders, 32, who pleaded guilty to making the false distress call in June, also has been ordered to pay $53,306 in restitution to the U.S. Coast Guard. According to U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade’s office, Sanders called the Coast Guard on March 11, stating, “…my boat capsized. I was the only one wearing a PFD; I made it ashore, my family didn’t.”
