Another layer of mystery is forming around Plum Island — this time about its future.
What is certain is that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is shuttering the animal disease research facility on the government-owned island off the eastern tip of New York’s Long Island. It has been closed to the public since the last century because of the sensitive nature of the bio-medical research that goes on there.
The fate of the island, just 12 miles from the Connecticut coast, could be as glamorous as a new tony waterfront community or as quiet as a protected bird sanctuary.
