Andrew Eddy, 30, was lucky to have his wife aboard on Sunday. He was snorkeling off of a private boat at Sombrero Key Light when he suffered a severe shark bite to the shoulder almost immediately after entering the water.
Eddy’s wife, Margot Dukes Eddy, who is pregnant, saw the shark’s dorsal fin only moments before the water filled with blood. Without hesitation, she dove into the water and pulled her husband to safety. Eddy was airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami. His condition has not been released.
Witnesses reported that Eddy was attacked by an 8- to 10-foot bull shark. Shark attacks are rare in the area, with only 17 unprovoked attacks reported in Monroe County since 1882.
