David Helvarg is an author, environmentalist and president of the Blue Frontier Campaign, a marine conservation organization. His books include “Rescue Warriors” The U.S. Coast Guard, America’s Forgotten Heroes;” and “Saved by the Sea: A Love Story with Fish.”

On the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Helvarg, who grew up in New York, has written a personal essay about the maritime roots of New York City. He recounts that tragic day and the heroism exhibited by professional mariners – captains and crew of tugs, ferries and pilot boats – who came to the aid of those in need.
