One person involved in a river rescue attempt Tuesday night on the Mississippi River has died, the Coast Guard confirmed Wednesday.
Reports indicated a barge worker who came to the aid of a family in a bass boat, which had run out of fuel, was critically injured during the rescue attempt.
Three adults and two young children in the stranded bass boat were rescued and were not seriously hurt, St. Louis police and fire officials said.
The would-be rescuer was hurt when a small boat launched for the rescue flipped in the river’s strong current.
