A French sailor attempting to sail around the world in just an eight-foot boat had to be plucked to safety off southern Australia in wild seas in the Torres Straits.
Battling 10-foot seas and 40-knot winds, the 70-year-old solo skipper was reportedly suffering heart problems when he activated his EPIRB in the Coral Sea about 2 a.m. Sunday, according to a report by the Courier Mail.
It is understood sailor Daniel Alary had been at sea for 100 days aboard his micro-yacht, Poisson d’Avril, a French term for “April fool.” The vessel remains adrift in the open ocean.
Rescuers described his ambitious blue water voyage as a “Don Quixote-like quest.”
