One of the world’s most accomplished and celebrated sailors, Ken Read, will give a presentation Wednesday at Mystic Seaport about his firsthand experience with the Volvo Ocean Race.
The presentation begins at 7 p.m. in the River Room at Latitude 41° Restaurant & Tavern.
The Volvo Ocean Race is held every three years and is one of the most challenging and extreme races in the sport of competitive sailing. Boats depart from Europe and race around the world in 9 or 10 legs with port stops in between.
The route takes the competitors through some of the most treacherous waters on the planet. Read will describe what it is like to experience the adversity and thrills of the race in some of the world’s fastest sailboats.
Read was skipper of Puma Ocean Racing team’s il Mostro in the 2008-2009 Volvo Ocean Race, and returned as skipper to lead Puma Ocean Racing powered by Berg’s entry Mar Mostro in the 2011-2012 race.
Earlier in his career, Read was twice at the helm with Dennis Conner’s America’s Cup campaigns, was twice named United States Rolex Yachtsman of the Year, and has 46 World, North American, and U.S. National Championships to his credit.
Read’s presentation will feature exclusive videos and photography.
