Tuesday and today, just ahead of the Newport (R.I.) International Boat Show, 26 firefighters from the Newport Fire Department are receiving special training on fighting fires aboard yachts and in marinas and yacht yards.
Typically, yacht fires in marinas and boatyards are fought by firefighters who have only been trained to fight fires in buildings and homes.
The one-of-a-kind program includes a classroom review of shipboard firefighting, a tour of the Newport Shipyard and a walk-through of vessels from a firefighting perspective.

AIG’s Private Client Group, which insures many yachts in Newport, Resolve Maritime Academy, a leader in yacht and shipboard firefighting training, and the Newport Shipyard are hosting the program.
