Despite Hurricane Odile, the 16th annual Los Cabos Billfish Tournament got under way Wednesday with an opening-day party at the Playa Grande Resort and Grand Hotel’s beachside terrace.

The tourney participants are among the first to visit Cabo San Lucas since the storm, and cheers from the crowd as the tournament announced “Los Cabos is Unstoppable” reinforced that Los Cabos is definitely up and running.

As more flights are added each day, the vibe in Los Cabos is energetic and optimistic, tournament organizers said.

Tournament fishing began Wednesday morning as Rubén Reachi Lugo, secretary of tourism for Baja California Sur, shot a flare at 7:30 a.m., signaling the official start of Los Cabos’ fall tournament season. Fishing has been fantastic, so the teams were eager and excited to get underway.

Weigh-in of fish and billfish release video check-in will take place during the three days of fishing — Wednesday through Friday — at the IGY Marina Cabos San Lucas weigh gantry and office. Spectators are welcome for the weigh-ins and can see real-time results on the tournament’s scorekeeper at http://www.loscabosbillfishtournament.com

The tournament’s gala awards banquet and celebration will take place Saturday evening on the Playa Grande Resort & Grand Spa’s beachside terrace.
