David Mearns has an undergraduate degree in marine biology and a graduate degree in marine geology. The company he worked for did worldwide search and recovery for the U.S. Navy, and that got him started on his future career of finding shipwrecks.
He found Vasco da Gama’s ship Esmeralda in fairly shallow water off the coast of Oman. Some of the antiquities Mearns and his team have found — ceramics from West Africa, the area around the Indian Ocean and the Far East — reveal the routes the ship sailed.
About 2,800 artifacts brought to the surface have been studied and preserved and are displayed in Oman’s National Museum.
