There’s something to be said for delayed gratification.
After nearly 40 years of stop-and-start boatbuilding, Charles “Stormy” Mayo launched the 36-foot schooner that had been a work in progress in his Provincetown, Mass., driveway for nearly 40 years.
“I took 12 years off. I was on the brink of quitting. Lord knows why I started again,” he told the Cape Cod Times.
“I feel a tremendous amount of joy,” said Janet Whelan of Provincetown, who grew up with Mayo. “Years of work and love went into this boat. They finally got it in the water, and frankly, no one thought they would. So I’m very happy for Stormy and very happy to see the boat floating.”
Mayo was happy, too.
“It’s been worth it all the way along,” he said. “If it never floated, it was worth it. You’ve got to enjoy the process, and I’ve loved the process. Now a whole new phase starts.”
