Mar Mostro, Puma Ocean Racing’s Volvo Open 70, arrived Wednesday in Cape Town, South Africa — 16 days after dismasting about 2,150 nautical miles from the Leg 1 finish of the Volvo Ocean Race.
When the rig failed Nov. 21, the crew motored the damaged yacht to Tristan da Cunha and awaited transport to Cape Town. In a tricky open-water maneuver, Mar Mostro was hoisted aboard the container ship Team Bremen on Dec. 2 and placed in a cradle on deck for the passage. The mast arrived Dec. 3 in Cape Town.
