As Carnival Vista — Carnival Cruise Line’s new ship — pulled away from the Marina del Nettuno port in Messina, Sicily, it created a large wake that swamped a concrete pier and smaller boats.
Some of the boats sank, but no one was injured in the Aug. 28 incident.

Italian newspapers reported that port authorities have opened an investigation. The newspaper Tempostretto said two piers were destroyed and that damage to the marina and small boats could exceed 250,000 euros, or about $278,875.
The largest ship in the cruise line’s fleet, Carnival Vista is more than 1,060 feet, has 15 decks and can hold almost 4,000 passengers.
The 133,500-ton cruise ship was launched earlier this spring. It embarked on its maiden voyage May 1, traveling from Trieste, Italy, to Barcelona, Spain.
