Bone and ivory have been used for thousands of years for jewelry, needles, bowls and other items, but scrimshaw is a unique art form that originated on whaling ships sailing out of New England.

From October until next Jan. 1, Mystic Seaport is hosting the 37th annual International Marine Art Exhibition and Sale at the museum’s Maritime Gallery. Nearly 100 award-winning artists will showcase their work.
