Rowing solo 3,229 miles across the Atlantic with no chase boat or assistance is a newsworthy effort. However, when you are 70 years old the effort earns the moniker “The Unbelievable Voyage” from ‘‘Ripley’s Believe It or Not!”
Stein Hoff set off on May 15 from New York in his 24-foot rowing boat with GPS, a satellite phone, a VHF radio and ample food supplies. His destination is St. Mary in the Isles of Scilly in Great Britain.
A note to skeptics: Hoff is in spectacular physical shape for the expected three-month voyage.

Hoff is re-creating the 1896 journey of two Norwegian Americans — George Harbo and Gabriel Samuelsen — who were the first people to row across an ocean.
Robert Ripley wrote about them in his first ‘‘Ripley’s Believe It or Not!” Ripley’s is sponsoring Hoff’s attempt.
