West Marine is seeking applications for $30,000 in marine conservation grants.

Five to 10 grants will be awarded in amounts ranging from $500 to $5,000. Applications are available online at www.westmarine.com/bluefuture. The closing date for entries is May 1 and the winners will be announced June 8, which is World Oceans Day.

The 2013 grants are focused on projects that enhance fish populations, including engaging anglers in data collection; enhancing marine habitats; and educating anglers about barotrauma.

The grants are awarded through a formal application process in which organizations must submit their proposal directly to West Marine. All applications will be reviewed by the marine conservation action team.

Preference will be given to organizations that have neighboring West Marine stores and engage associates and customers in conservation and data collection efforts. Applicants must show sound financial policies and management and scientific substantiation.
