Three men tossed into Lake Michigan by storm-driven waves were rescued by the wife of one of them who became worried and went searching for them, officials say.
Peter Kovats, 62, and two of his friends – all experienced sailors and members of the Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club – were celebrating Kovats’ birthday and had left Montrose Harbor in a 19-foot sailboat named Peter Pan on Wednesday evening.
But they couldn’t make it back to the harbor before a fast-moving storm passed through around 8 p.m., said Mel Levy, the club’s commodore.
Kovats’ wife Mary – the club’s rear commodore – and two other club members took one of the club’s 22-foot power boats to search for her husband’s boat.
