A sailing yacht valued at $2.4 million ran hard aground, was dismasted and rolled last week in Maine’s Penobscot Bay.
No serious injuries were reported when the 2011 German Frers Hylas 70 hit East Goose Rock off Lasell Island, according to Coast Guard Station Northern New England. The boat was stabilized and hauled to shore by a crew from Wayfarer Marine in Camden, who were among the first on the scene.
The Archangel hit the rocks just after 1 p.m. Thursday while under full sail, witnesses said. The force of the crash caused the mast to fall. Sailors on the water estimated that the boat was traveling at 6 or 7 knots.
The yacht, which is chartered out of Newport, R.I., and the Caribbean, was apparently on a course for North Haven, Maine, according to a report by The Penobscot Bay Pilot.
