Oil well ‘static kill’ could start next week

Thad W. Allen, the retired Coast Guard admiral overseeing the federal response to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, said Monday that the two-step process of permanently sealing BP’s blown-out well could begin next week.

Allen said workers could begin the procedure called a static kill Aug. 2, followed by the start of drilling into the bottom of the stricken well.
