The Coast Guard issued a news release stating that it and the State of California are finalizing the planning phase for the operation to determine whether there is recoverable oil near the wreck of the SS Montebello.
The tanker was sunk during World War II and now lies in 900 feet of water approximately 6.5 miles off Cambria, Calif. Plans call for a remotely operated vehicle to carefully examine the wreck for the presence of oil.
